Two memorial benches honoring USP Costume Shop Founder and Walk of Fame Member, Dottie McGee, have been placed outside the Costume Shop on Main Street. The benches were donated to the City of Pella by Dottie’s family. The existing USP memorial bench which had always sat outside the Costume Shop has been moved by the City just outside the Community Center. Dottie McGee passed away earlier this summer. USP plans to honor her memory at the annual USP Awards Night on October 4th at the Pella Opera House.

All auditions will be held at the Pella Community Center. No roles are precast and no experience is necessary. Being in a USP show is a wonderful way to get to know fellow community members while participating in the fun and excitement of a stage production. USP regularly casts community members in their first stage experience, so if being in a show is on your bucket list we’d love to have you come and audition!

Union Street Players annual family potluck picnic was held Monday, August 18th. A good crowd of members and family members gathered at West Market Park to enjoy a gorgeous summer evening, a potluck supper, and a lot of fun together. USP President, Tom Vander Well, presided over a truncated meeting which included a report on USP’s 2013-2014 fiscal year, which was a banner year in many ways:
- Three profitable main stage productions
- Record patron support
- Record advertising sales
The year was also touched with tragedy. Since last year’s annual meeting our group has lost two members. Sherm Van Zee passed away last fall. Early this summer USP Costume Shop Founder and Walk of Fame member, Dottie McGee passed away.
It was announced that Don Graves will be this year’s inductee in the USP Walk of Fame. Graves was a founding member of USP and has performed a myriad of roles both on stage and off throughout USP’s long history. He will be honored at USP’s annual Awards Night on October 4th at the Pella Opera House.
The evening concluded with an election of the Board of Directors for 2014-2015. This year’s Board of Directors are:
President: Tom Vander Well
Vice-President: Deb Linn
Treasurer: Wendy Vander Well
Secretary: Anne McCullough Kelly
At Large: Mat Kelly
At Large: Mark Schaefer
At Large: Cody Kooi
Union Street Players, Pella’s award-winning community theatre, has closed the curtain on another successful show. Under the direction of Kim Beyer and the music direction of Brystal Hopkins, Seussical the Musical brought the beloved works of Dr. Seuss to the stage in a musical extravaganza highlighted by Lori Vande Zande’s incredible costumes.
Kudos to the stellar cast and crew which included stalwart USP Vets as well as some incredibly talented newbies!
