In the annual membership meeting of Union Street Players, USP elected new board members for the 2007-2008 year (USP fiscal year starts September 1) and approved the 2008 production season.
(It should be noted that USP has done a Tulip Time production for the past three years. Typically, USP and Central College have traded off doing a show every other year for the annual Pella Tulip Festival. USP agreed to do a production for Central College in 2006, but starting in 2008 we take a much needed break and return to the every other year agreement with our compatriots at the local university.)
Union Street Players 2008 Season will be:
The Odd Couple (Female Version) by Neil Simon
USP starts 2008 by staging a classic comedy with a whole new twist. Unger and Madison are at it again! Florence Ungar and Olive Madison, that is, in Neil Simon’s hilarious contemporary comic classic: the female version of The Odd Couple . Instead of the poker party that begins the original version, Ms. Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. The Pigeon sisters have been replaced by the hilarious Constanzuela brothers. USP audiences should plan on plenty of warm laughter to ease the February chill.
The Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan
Ahoy! Swashbuckling adventure and romance sail onto the USP stage in one of the most beloved musicals of all time. Frederic, a Pirate’s apprentice leaves the pirate band to find love and marriage. What he finds is a Major General with many daughters, but his band of pirates return and claim them all as brides. What will the honorable Major General do to save his daughters from their fate? Will Frederic choose love or loyalty to the pirates? Arrrrggghh. This is a show you won’t want to miss! USP has conscripted Spencer Ver Meer to direct this band of rouges.
Cheaper by the Dozen dramatized by Christopher Sergel
Another beloved American classic caps off the 2008 season. Frank Gilbreth and his wife are industrial engineers and pioneers in motion efficiency. With twelve children, their home becomes a real-life laboratory. This creates many hilarious situations, unless you happen to be a teen-aged daughter trying to fit in at school and avoid embarrassment with boys. Father and daughter end up at odds and must come to an understanding. Love, laughter and tender family moments make this show the perfect family entertainment for your 2008 holiday.
