A select audience, including the Tulip Queen and her court, were in the Joan Kuyper Farver Auditorium to preview Union Street Players‘ production of the world premiere of Stephanie Alexander’s Tulip House. The preview earned positive comments from audience members, who were struck by the shows emotional impact.
"All the characters were so real," one audience member commented after the show. "I believed each one."
The show tells the story of a modern-day California family who are cast to spend nine weeks living as a 1935 Pella family (the year of the first Tulip Time) in a reality television series called "Tulip House". The mother is excited about the show, the teen-age daughter is horrified (played by Wendy and Madison Vander Well, right), and the father is along for the ride. What the family doesn’t know, is that their historical experience in Pella will bring them on a collision course with their own past – from which they thought they were running.
