A host of
aspiring actors made casting choices difficult for the production team of Union
Street Players’ holiday musical The
Christmas Post. Director Wendy Vander Well was pleased with turn out for
auditions, but the number of quality actors created a definite challenge.
“There were some very hard choices to make,” she said. “We had a lot of capable actors to choose from. The auditions brought in actors from as far as Newton and Oskaloosa. It’s exciting because we have a great mix of veteran actors who will be well known to our audiences and a host of new faces who bring fresh talent to our stage.”
Fortunately, the Broadway style musical has a large cast, so there’s room for everyone to be
involved. The play is set around a small town department store on Christmas Eve
1947. It tells the heartwarming story of a single mother, widowed by World War
II, who must trust in a miracle to provide Christmas gifts for her children.
Two Norman Rockwell paintings provided inspiration for the musical. Along with
the principal characters, the show has a chorus of actors and singers playing
shoppers, store employees and “newsies”.
Rehearsals began in earnest last week and will continue through Thanksgiving. The Joan
Kuyper Farver Auditorium in the Pella Community Center (712 Union St.) is the
stage home of Union Street Players. Performances are scheduled November 30 and
December 1, 2, 3, 7, and 8, which coincides with Pella’s holiday festivities and the annual
tour of homes.
"Not only will it be quality family entertainment, but the play also reflects
the faith and values that have always been important to our community," Vander
Well said. “The show will be a great way for people to complete their holiday
visit to Pella. It’s a great opportunity for tour groups and visitors to sample all that Pella has to offer.
There are still opportunities for people to get involved with the production. Help is needed with set
construction, props, and back stage help. Those interested should contact Vander Well (641-620-9107) or Producer Pat Moriarity (641-628-1549).
