USP Sets the Stage for Annual Summer Youth Drama Camp

Union Street Players will once again be holding summer drama camps for children. The camps will run July 30th through August 3rd at the Pella Community Center, 712 Union Street.  Brystal Hopkins will lead the morning session for students who have just completed kindergarten through 4th grade, and Suzi Jones will lead the afternoon session for students in grades 5-8. The morning session runs from 8:30 am until 11:30 am  and the afternoon runs from 12:30 pm until 3:30 pm. On Friday August 3rd a performance for family and friends will be held at 6:30 pm.

2012 USP Drama Camp Registration Form

Registration forms can also be picked up at the Community Center office. Interested parties can also contact Brystal Hopkins at brystalhopkins@gmail.com, Suzi Jones at suzanne.jones@pella.k12.ia.us or mail completed registrations to 503 Washington, Pella, Iowa 50219. Both camps will work on developing theatre skills through activities involving movement, voice and storytelling. “A great thing about developing theatre skills is that students are also building skills for communication, cooperation and creativity,” said Suzi Jones. “Those are skills that are directly transferable to the classroom at any age.” Families are encouraged to register soon as classes have been filled to capacity in previous summers.

USP Changes Regular Monthly Meeting Schedule

2012 CalendarStarting with January 2012, Union Street Players will hold our regularly scheduled membership meetings on the SECOND Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. USP has traditionally met the 1st Monday of each month. Because production weekends often fall around the beginning or end of a month, the Board of Directors regularly moved the meeting back a week. In addition, holidays such as the 4th of July often necessitated moving the meeting date. By moving our regular monthly meeting back to the 2nd Monday of each month, the Board of Directors hopes to avoid having to move the meeting date so often.

USP meets in Room 201 of the Pella Community Center. Meetings are open to the public though only members are allowed to vote in the meeting,

The Passing of a USP Family Member

We regret to announce that, earlier this week, Union Street Players lost a friend and family member when Mike Atkins passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Mike's boundless enthusiasm and contagious joy was a welcome presence whenever he accompanied a USP production. His musical talent, but more importantly his sweet spirit and good humor, will be sorely missed. Mike's entire family are a part of our USP family. His wife, Cyndi, has acted, served as Assistant Director, and is a member of USP's Board of Directors. Mike's children, Ben and Megan, are also veterans of USP productions and Megan is in the cast of our current production of K.O.L.D. Radio, Whitefish Bay.

Family will be at visitation tonight at Garden Chapel Funeral Home (1301 Main St., Pella, Iowa) from 5-7 pm Friday night, March 26th. Celebration of Life service Saturday, March 27th at 10:30 am at Trinity Reformed Church (407 Franklin, Pella, Iowa).

Please join us in our prayers for Mike's family and loved ones.
